#22: PASSING OF THE GUARD

Late night shifts, Mad Max: Fury Road, and filmmaker Lee Kolinsky, along with other tidbits ’bout stuff popping up on screens. Elgin and Paul chat about

  • David Letterman’s retirement (as Louis C.K. sorta called it) and related changes in the late night landscape, including viral videos and lip sync battling. Who will be the new king of late night? Fallon, Kimmel, Conan, Colbert, or somebody who isn’t a white male? And does that crown even matter any more?
  • Mad Max: Fury Road,  directed by George Miller and starring Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy. What does this reboot (by the original series’ creator) do that’s different from other recent action films? Do the filmmaking and the acting trump those of the original three films? Is it feminist? Is it sexist? We discuss the (de)merits of this frantic, almost wordless tale of a band of women, plus Hardy’s Max, escaping albino guards and other grotesques loyal to a savage warlord.
  • The independent filmmaker Lee Kolinsky — writer of the recent short Junkie Heaven, which is about a drug addict war vet and his dealings with some “guardian angels.” Through our first-ever interview, we get insights on how Kolinsky and his collaborators made that film, Bullified, Send No Flowers (starring Sean Young), and The Blue Lizard. We also discuss the nitty gritty bits of the process, including fundraising, promoting, and distribution.
