#35: GRAPHIC, BUT HOW NOVEL?

Finding Dory, Voltron: Legendary Defender, and Preacher; plus Animal Kingdom, Gaycation, Huang’s World, and United Shades of America.

Paul and Elgin talk about

  • Pixar’s blockbuster Finding Dory, directed and written by Andrew Stanton et al. and starring Ellen DeGeneres as the forgetful blue tang fish Dory, Albert Brooks as the anxious clown fish Marlin, and Ed O’Neill as the grumpy and resourceful septopus (octopus missing a tentacle). What does this sequel 13 years after the original have to offer that’s fresh?
  • DreamWorks Animation and Netflix’s reboot Voltron: Legendary Defender, featuring the voice work of Steven Yeun, Rhys Darby, and Kimberly Brooks, among others. Are the familiar, nostalgic elements of the beloved original updated compellingly enough to warrant our season-long attention?
  • AMC’s Preacher,  developed by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin (based on the comic book by Garth Ennis) with stars Dominic Cooper (as the Preacher Jesse Custer), Ruth Negga (as Tulip, his former partner in crime), and Joseph Gilgun (as Cassidy, a vampire on the run). What do we make of this genre mash-up (Western, sci-fi, horror, salt-of-the-earth small-town tale, etc.)? Are the creators able to harness the material, or is it simply too bonkers?
  • In the lead-in free-for-all segment, Elgin discusses TNT’s attempt at prestige drama Animal Kingdom, starring Ellen Barkin and Scott Speedman (based on the 2010 indie critical darling). And they both discuss the Viceland travelogue series Huang’s World with Eddie Huang. To round out the discussion, Paul talks about another Viceland show, Gaycation with Ellen Paige, and Elgin chats up CNN’s United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell.
