#36: SCI-FIDELITY

Ghostbusters, Stranger Things, and BrainDead; plus The Night Of, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, O.J.: Made in America, 2016 Emmy nominations, Black Market, and Billions.

Elgin and Paul review

  • The “controversial” reboot of Ghostbusters (directed by Paul Feig and starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, and Chris Hemsworth);
  • Netflix’s “homagey” Stranger Things (from the Duffer brothers and starring Winona Ryder with a cast of young newcomers); and
  • CBS’s odd, up-to-the-moment political satire BrainDead involving, um, brain-burrowing space alien ants (from Michelle and Robert King and starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead).

    In what ways do these sci-fi (fantasy? horror?) works draw on the classics from the ’80s and other eras? Are they too slavish to the originals from the likes of Spielberg? What fresh angles (beyond the obvious, such as switching gender) do they offer? With respect to the first two, are viewers now facing nostalgia burnout?

  • In the lead-in free-for-all segment, Elgin and Paul discuss the latest Emmy nominations, which are far more diverse than last spring’s Oscar nominations were. They also talk about a wide range of other shows, including O.J.: Made in America and Black Market.
